A virtual Arts & Sciences display
So much of our knowledge about life in Viking Age Scandinavia comes from analysis of grave finds. In fact, much of the knowledge and research that underpins the SCA are based on grave finds. How a society treats their deceased tells us a lot about their values as a people and their beliefs about the world, the divine and their relationship to them.
What would have happened to your persona at the end of their life? Would they have been buried in a grave? A tomb? A chamber? Would goods have been included with them? Sacrifices? Was there hope for an afterlife?
Life and death were inextricable for Viking Age Scandinavians. For many peoples across the SCA period, death was something they had an intimate relationship with rather than something experienced separately from life. With respect for the lives that have taught us so much from the past, we challenge participants to create a grave for their persona, either visually or as a written description.
